Havanese and Purchasing |
What is a Havanese? They are small non-shedding companion dogs which come in many colors. They are wonderful, playful, happy, little clown dogs who wiggle & waggle, twirl & swirl, bounce & pounce, smile & woo, woo, woo, their cute little pesonalities into our hearts to delight and entertain us. They roll on their backs for a belly rub from family, friends and even strangers. They race around the house and yard "flying" through the air. They flip and toss and chase their toys for hours of fun. If there is no one around to entertain, they entertain themselves. Their silly, playful antics will have you laughing in delight and amusement. They nestle themselves in your lap and look at you with adoring eyes. They love you, they seek to please you. They follow you everywhere. They are your best 4 legged friend. They look into your eyes and touch your soul. Their love is genuine and life lasting. They are funny little jesters. They are an extraordinary breed of dog. They will play for hours with children or sit in your lap or by your side. They adjust and adapt themselves to every age and every circumstance. Do they have any negative traits? They are watchdogs, they want the whole world to see them and know they are there! They sometimes eat things we humans don't appreciate. They like to pull the stuffing out of their toys! They can be a little "rough" with very small children, treating them like their littermates. They are companion dogs and prefer NOT to be left alone for hours. Boredom can result in misbehavior. How often do they need grooming? Havanese have hair and not fur, therefore their hair grows long and may need trimming if you own a pet Havanese. Show Havanese are not trimmed at all except around their feet and the inside corners of their eyes. A pet Havanese can be kept in long or short hair. Havanese hair is soft and silky and needs to be brushed and combed regularly. You can tie their hair up on their heads to keep the hair out of their eyes or for a pet you can trim the hair away from their eyes. A pet can be kept in long hair until 9-10 months. Around 10 months of age their hair starts changing from puppy hair to adult hair. This change makes them very susceptible to matting. This propensity to mat lasts through the change from puppy hair to adult hair. You may groom your pet Havanese yourself or have your dog professionally groomed. What is the procedure for purchasing a puppy? When we have puppies, they are ready to start leaving after 9 weeks of age. They will have gone to the Vet for a least their first set of shots, been wormed and BAER tested for normal hearing. All of our mothers and fathers are CERF yearly and registered with CERF. They are registered with OFA for hips and knees and registered for normal hearing with a BAER test. All our mothers and fathers have normal hearing. Dogs over 2 years of age are registered with CHIC - Canine Health Information Center. Our dogs pedigrees are listed on the Havanese Gallery. I conduct telephone interviews for everyone interested in our puppies. When we have puppies, I will be taking interviews in the late afternoons and evenings. Please do not call before 4:30 because I will be busy grooming dogs. I require a $500 returnable deposit which is to be sent to me after the telephone interview. When the puppies are around 7 weeks of age I have people come to visit the puppies, myself and the parents. I am looking to place together puppies and families best suited to eachother. During the interview I will ask you what you are looking for in a puppy, personality wise, and then will try to match families with the puppy most suited to your family needs. I have upon occasion returned deposits to families if I felt there would not be a good match or for other reasons. Please respect my decision if I return your deposit. My aim is to have happy puppies and happy families. At the first visit, if all goes well and we are all comfortable with eachother, I will give you a puppy packet with literature for you to read, a list of supplies to order and a catalog about the food the puppies eat. If we are not comfortable with eachother I will return your deposit. After the puppies have received their first set of shots at the Vet and have been BAER tested, they will be ready to leave for their new homes. I do have a Contract to be signed by you. I guarantee the health of my puppies. All pets are required to be spayed or neutered at 6 months of age. I do not sell breeding stock, the only dogs that can be bred from my puppies are dogs that have earned their Championships and have passed all their health tests. I keep the AKC Application Papers until you send me a spay/neuter certificate from your Vet. As a Show Breeder, I am breeding for quality, health, temperament and the Havanese Show Standard. All puppies that I do not keep for the show ring for myself are placed as companion pets or potential show puppies. All our puppies are sold for the same price for both companion pets and potential show dogs; only the contract and requirements are different. Havanese are very loving, playful, lap dogs. As a general rule, the girls love you and the boys adore you. Girls are more independent and stubborn, the boys tend to be more attentive, obedient and needy. My suggestion is that you choose a puppy by what you are looking for in temperament rather than by color or sex. Many Havanese colors change as the puppy grows, therefore, unless you buy a puppy that is a true black or white, what you start out with will not be what you end up with.
